1943 ROBIN Douglas Croft

Douglas Croft
Aug 12, 1926 - Oct 24, 1963
Buried Fort Rosecrans National Cemetary, San Diego CA

Born Douglas Malcom Wheatcroft, Doug had a promising career as a child actor in films like Kings Row with Ronald Reagan, Yankee Doodle Dandy with Jimmy Cagney and George Washington Slept Here with Jack Benny before being cast as Dick Grayson, the young ward of Millionaire Bruce Wayne and who is also Batman's assistant Robin.

Croft was the first actor to appear in the role at an age closer to what was envisioned by Batman's creators-- although to be fair Robin was anywhere from 8-12 years old in the comics but his short stature and slight build let him pass for a much younger person.

As he grew up he found work harder to come by and ended up taking a job as a short order cook.  He developed a drinking problem and died of Liver disease in 1963 at the age of 37.
